As parents, we want the greatest outcomes for our children. Yet our best intentions of support can be met with rejection. Teenagers want deeply for their parents to care but often push back against parental oversight.
This is 100% developmentally appropriate.
Counseling: College Transition
The passage from high school to college can be a rewarding time for young people and their parents. It signifies an expansion of educational and social horizons, and increased independence from the family unit.
This time can also impose increased stress, uncertainty, disagreement, sadness and disappointment on a family system. There are deadlines to be met, decisions to be made, varying needs to be considered. Hiring a college counselor is an excellent support in this process but there are families who benefit from even more assistance during this period.
What I offer through college transition counseling is a safe and non-judgmental time for young people to reflect, increase self-efficacy and optimize their potential. Using tele-counseling, I begin my college transition work with clients anytime from junior year of high school through to their first year of college. If your child is already in college, I will work with them to determine healthy routines balancing their academic, social and extra curricular needs. I can also support them through the process of seeking academic and emotional supports on-campus as needed.
I support college bound youth with a focus on the following domains:
goal setting, time management & task organization
accountability with applications, extra curriculars & academics
physical self-care & limiting risky behavior
emotion regulation
self-advocacy & securing supports
I support the parents of college-bound youth with a focus on the following domains:
feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, frustration and sadness during the application and launching process
boundary setting with young adult children
determining optimal levels of financial and emotional support for your child
